Elon Musk Defends Twitter Layoffs, Blames Management for Paying Employees

On Friday, November 4th, Elon Musk, the new owner of the social media platform Twitter, defended his decision to lay off close to 1/3 of the company.

“Twitter was losing close to 4 million dollars per day after advertisers pulled away, because they didn’t like freedom of speech,” he said.

“At the same time,” he explained, “the previous management of Twitter had signed irresponsible contracts with their employees, guaranteeing them a salary, even when revenues were declining, as they are right now.”

“So, I had no choice,” he said. “I had to lay people off.”

“I suppose I could have just had people killed instead,” he reflected. “But in the end it amounted to almost the same thing. When you factor in funeral expenses, trial settlements, etc. the cost to me was about the same. So, yes, unfortunately, layoffs happened to be the best option.”

Asked how he expected the company to function with so few employees, he said. “The same as before. The people who stay will just have to put in 22 hours per day, and, of course, no weekends — we cannot afford them to have weekends.”

“And, finally,” he shared, “it came out I was completely right when I wanted to pull out of the deal because of bots. More than 90% of Twitter’s tweets are bots anyway. Mostly Russian. But at any rate, we don’t need to regulate bots. They will do their own thing, follow their own agenda. That’s what freedom of speech is all about.”

“You don’t need many employees when most of the traffic is bots,” he said. “Twitter will do just fine with me, and a few very very hard working employees.”

“Maybe, we won’t even need employees in the future,” he said. “Maybe I could get the Russians to create some more bots who will do the work instead.”

“This is how Twitter will run when I move to Mars,” he concluded.
